Homeowner Claims Process

  • Homeowner Claims Process

Damage to your home or personal property - even a small loss - can be an emotional and confusing experience.  We are committed to resolving your claim, with a quick and easy claims process.

    Immediately after a Homeowner Loss

    • Protect yourself and others.  Always be careful before entering a damaged building.  If your property has sustained serious structural damage or if there are any doubts about its safety, contact local government officials to determine the status of your home before entering.
    • Report downed power lines or gas leaks to the utility company.
    • Keep electricity turned off if there is standing water in the house.
    • Never touch electrical components while standing in water. If your safety appears at risk, leave the premises immediately.
    • Immediately contact Liberty Mutual to report how, when and where the damage occurred.  Provide a general description of the damage, and if possible, have your policy number handy.  Make a note of your Claim Handler's name and telephone number as soon as you have it.

    Report Your Loss

If you have a loss over the weekend or in the middle of the night, you don't need to wait until Monday or the next morning to get the claims process moving.  Liberty Mutual representatives are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to take your loss report, explain the claims process, and assist you in securing your home against further damage.

    Protect Your Property
Take reasonable steps to protect your property from further damage. This might include boarding up windows and salvaging undamaged items. Your Claim Handler can advise you on specific actions you can take to secure your home and property.  If emergency services are necessary, Liberty Mutual will assist you in making arrangements and securing your home.

    Getting Your Home Repaired
Our Contractor Network Referral Program* (CNRP) is a network of approved vendors established by Liberty Mutual to provide our customers with a choice of competent, reliable contractors to perform building repairs related to an insured loss.
You are under no obligation to use the services.  If you do, Liberty Mutual will guarantee the workmanship performed by the CNRP for one year. Subject to policy provisions, the only cost to you will be your deductible and any non-recoverable depreciation.

Prepare a List of Damaged or Lost Items
    • Keep damaged items until your Claim Handler has visited your home, and consider photographing or videotaping the damage for further documentation.
    • Prepare a list of damaged or lost items and provide receipts for those items, if possible.

If You Need to Relocate, Keep Your Receipts
    • If your home is unsafe or damage is so extensive that you cannot live there, keep records of all additional expenses incurred as a result.  Your Claim Handler can assist you in locating temporary housing, if necessary, and advise you of your policy coverage for additional living expenses.
    • If you cannot live in your home or need to purchase clothing or other necessities immediately, your Claim Handler can offer you an advance against the total settlement amount of your claim.

Complete and Return Your Claim Forms
    • After you have reported your claim, your Claim Handler will send you important information to assist you and the claim forms that will be necessary for you to complete and return within a certain number of days.
    • Read the information carefully and contact your Claim Handler as soon as possible if you have any questions or require additional information.
    • Fill out and return the claim forms as soon as possible.

How Your Claim Will Be Paid
    • Any advance payments will be applied to the total settlement amount.  As agreements are reached on the value of damaged property, additional checks may be issued.
    • Your deductible and any applicable depreciation will be deducted from the total cost of your loss up to the limit of your policy.
    • If you have a mortgage on your home, the check for repairs to the dwelling will be made out to both you and the mortgage lender.  In these cases, the mortgage lender will have to endorse the check.  Your mortgage lender may put the money in an escrow account and pay for the repairs as the work is completed.
    • Be sure to contact your mortgage lender to advise them of your loss and discuss the contractor's bid and other details as soon as possible after the loss occurs.  Your mortgage lender may want to inspect the finished job before making the final payment to the contractor.
